RATED Driving Lessons

The RATED InstructorsRATED is a unique scheme for learner drivers that has been specifically developed by Lewisham Council in partnership with local driving instructors and driving schools. By encouraging new drivers to understand their own personal risk factors RATED aims to reduce their accident rate. RATED consists of a number of elements, including:

  • Free theory test workshop to help prepare drivers for the theory and hazard perception tests in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
  • Free e-Learning provided by eDriving Solutions - one of the country’s leading providers of e-learning resources for the driver training profession. This package includes access to the DSA theory question bank and the DSA practice hazard perception clips
  • Trained instructors: only instructors who have completed a special training seminar with Lewisham Council will deliver the scheme. RATED instructors have access to groundbreaking resources which have been developed to help learner drivers identify how their judgement can be influenced by issues identified below. Learners are encouraged to become safer drivers by considering how they would manage these issues through the development of their own coping strategies..A successful RATED driver
  • Parental workshop: Mums and Dads get the chance to find out about the additional training delivered by their RATED driving instructor. Parents can also find out how to guide their sons and daughters safely through the learning process and beyond when the new drivers will be unaccompanied. Parents might even learn something themselves!

New Drivers - At Risk

Driving skillfully and safely is a much more complex process than simply being able to control a car or pass a test. The learning stage is relatively safe but 1 in 5 new drivers are involved in a collision in the first six months after passing the driving test. Research into collisions has identified a number of different reasons why newly qualified drivers are more likely to have an accident. RATED addresses these problem areas, which include:

  • Peer group pressure - being influenced by others
  • Distractions - such as loud music and mobile phones
  • Impairment due to fatigue, alcohol, drugs, medication
  • Poor speed choices
  • Over confidence
  • Not using seatbelts
